Little Scoopers (Pre-K / K)

Welcome to Little Scoopers!

Little Scoopers is our youngest level of organized lacrosse in Portsmouth. It is a co-ed program for both 4 & 5 year old boys and girls. The mission and philosophy of the Little Scoopers is to provide a lacrosse education of the sport's fundamentals in an atmosphere that promotes fun-first, community building, and preparation with highly organized practices.

Goals & Practice Structure

At this level, our goal is for the players to have FUN and be exposed to the fundamentals of the game; shooting/passing, catching, scooping, cradling and proper footwork. To teach these fundamental skills, we break the kids up into groups and move them through different stations, similar to the setup in this video, Kids Lacrosse Class Highlights. Check out this video for a quick tutorial on shooting/passing, catching, scooping, and cradling! LACROSSE 101! - 4 Basic Skills to Teach Beginners.

In addition to the stations, we will also set up scrimmages for the kids during the second half of the season.

I will be emailing out your child’s designated team/color before the start of the season. They will wear this color pinnie during practice each week (please return them each week at the end of practice). This will be the group they will move through stations with. Each week they will start with the same parent coach. The coach will remain at the station, and the kids will rotate.

Equipment

While always recommended, full equipment is not required at this age level.

Minimally girls are required to have a stick. They may use a girl's lacrosse helmet, eye protection, or a mouth guard if they want.

Minimally boys must have a stick, helmet, and gloves (hockey equipment is fine at this level). While not required, they can wear shoulder pads, elbow pads, and a mouthguard if they want.

Here is a link to the USA Lacrosse Equipment Guide for those new to the game. The guide provides pictures and descriptions of the equipment you need to outfit your son or daughter. You can buy equipment at Dicks Sporting Goods or at 2nd Time Around Sports in Cranston

Parent Involvement

Finally, parent involvement at this level is crucial!! If you are interested in helping, please email me!! You DO NOT need any experience with coaching or lacrosse.

For practice, as I mentioned, we will have stations set up, and I will rotate the kids every 10 minutes. As a parent volunteer, we will have you help out with one of the stations. we assure you; it is not complicated!
