What's the difference between Division 1 and Division 2 teams?

Division 2 (D2): For these teams we offer a traditional team format. Everyone who comes out is guaranteed a spot on the team. We do our best to give each player reasonable playing time. The D2 format is a great environment to learn the game of lacrosse if you are new to the game. It is also a high tempo atmosphere for experienced players too. Each year our D2 teams do well within our state-wide league.

Division 1 (D1): PYL is a member of the Rhode Island Youth Lacrosse League (RIYLL), which is the governing body for all youth lacrosse in the entire state of Rhode Island.

Portsmouth Lacrosse is offers a high level of competitive play for boys and girls. Along with the rewarding level of play is an expected higher level of commitment as stated in the policy below. The program will provide the opportunity and venue for those individuals having the experience, skills and desire to play lacrosse at a higher level. Teams will be selected through tryouts with rosters announced as soon as available.

* Only Grades 5/6 and 7/8 offer the option to play Division 1.

Division 1 Commitment Policy
When a player accepts a position on a D1 level team, he/she will be making a commitment to the coaches and every other player on that team. The team will be learning and practicing advanced methods of play that will only be meaningful if the entire team is involved in learning these methods.

Each player selected for a team will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to the practice and game schedule throughout the Spring season. If a player is playing two sports, this commitment will at the very least mean that if there is a conflict, he/she will miss both equally.

If a player demonstrates an inability or unwillingness to live up to the level of commitment required by the team, Portsmouth Lacrosse reserves the right to excuse a player from the team or recommend the player move to the D2 team within the Portsmouth Youth Lacrosse Association.

Playing time is determined by coaches and is NON-NEGOTIATABLE nor guaranteed. There are NO minimum minutes required in this league. We play to win and honor the game.
